Retrospect Somehow
Maybe you and I are related
But it doesn’t mean we’re connected.
Blood makes us relatives.
But effort...makes us family.
Funny how someone can share your blood
but not your heartbeat,
Somehow know your name
but not your story.
Somehow claim your history
and still have no idea
How much it cost you
to survive it.
Somehow, you grew up in the same house
and still feel like a stranger
passing in a hallway;
same roof, same walls,
and completely different worlds.
Somehow folks
who carry none of your DNA
can know you deeper and better
than those who share your blood.
They know the things
Your family never thought to ask about
They see the "you" that
Family didn't stay long enough to notice.
Connection isn’t inherited.
It’s created with time.
Excrutiatingly slow, intentional.
And soul‑to‑mind.
Maybe we don’t owe folks the "story of me"
They never even tried to understand.
Blood makes people relatives,
Effort makes people family.
Be blessed.
