Something to Laugh About
What if...
“I’ll give you something to cry
about”
finally retired,
and we replaced it with
“I’ll give you something to laugh
about” …
a softer threat,
a gentler promise,
a way of saying
I want joy to win this time.
There’s a science to being happy,
chemicals, wiring,
the whole invisible machinery.
But there’s an art to it, too.
A brushstroke you choose each
morning,
A color you mix yourself,
even when the day feels gray.
Happiness heals in ways
medicine can’t measure.
It spreads without permission,
jumps from face to face
like a good rumor.
Contagious in the best way.
What makes you happy?
Is it fate, or is it a choice you
make
in the quiet moments
When no one’s watching?
Maybe it’s both.
Maybe a gift you give yourself
and a gift you let yourself keep.
If I can make you feel sad,
Can I make you happy, too?
Maybe the power runs both ways.
Maybe we’re all walking around
With switches we didn’t know we had.
Is contented the same as happy?
Maybe it really is.
Maybe contentment is the steady
hum
And happiness is the spark
that dances on top of it.
And what about happy memories,
the ones that glow warm
even years later?
How do we filter out the sad
ones,
So the bright ones can speak
louder?
Maybe we just learn
to hold the sadness loosely
and hold joy with both hands.
Maybe the real trick is simple,
something you can do;
Give the world
something to laugh about
and let it echo back to you.
And be blessed.
